The CT Blocks at the Siemens Urban Sustainability Centre

Client: The Siemens Urban Sustainability Centre, London

Date: September 2012

Location: London Docklands

Background

The Siemens Urban Sustainability Centre is one of the world's biggest exhibitions on urban sustainability. It provides a space for the local community while also advancing education and adaptability in the fields of science, design, engineering and sustainability. The famous building is in the heart of London's docklands and will draw in roughly 100,000 guests annually.

This new focal point of interest in London needed perimeter protection against hostile vehicles, while blending seamlessly into the surrounding greenery, in addition being multi-purpose and provide seating to visitors.

Project Details

Working with Townshend, the landscape architects, security advisors Arup and contractor Foundation Developments, Townscape supplied and introduced 56 PAS 68 CT Blocks to make appealing defence lines around the building. The CT Blocks have a fine white texture and were divided at 1200mm interims to permit walking access, yet would still end antagonistic vehicle attacks instantly.

The CT Block is the perfect height for seating and has been deliberately situated for security while still remaining attractive and blending perfectly with the attraction.

Result

The brief required that the CT Blocks must be obtained and installed inside of a short 12 week window. Townscape makes its CT Blocks at its plant in Nottinghamshire, and so had the capacity to turn the request around quickly and oversee the installation, regardless of some troublesome climate conditions.

Townscape has provided the Urban Sustainability Centre with some brilliant perimeter protection, which also complements the scenery around the Centre.

The CT Blocks can be used as seating
